Because AMTK 157 on the eastbound Cardinal had to wait in the passing siding at Afton for a CSX empty grain train to pass, I was able to get down the mountain and meet it at Mechums River. It was running at 60mph to keep to its advertised. The stack of creosote ties to the left waiting to be hauled away is the remains of the walkway attached to the bridge over Mechums River that was replaced with a metal grate walkway. Signal 192 peeks above the pile of derietis. |

Today, we see the late-running Westbound Cardinal as it makes its way up the Blue Ridge Grade. |

To the right in the shadows you can make out the arched portal of Greenwood Tunnel, the first of 4 tunnels built prior to the Civil War under the engineering direction of Claudius Crozet. This 518 ft. tunnel part of the original Blue Ridge grade out of Charlottesville to the Blue Ridge Tunnel beneath Rockfish Gap. Greenwood Tunnel was completed In 1853. It was bypassed and abandoned in 1941-42. |
